The Sprout story

Inspired by our early days of bringing electricity to local communities.

As a community-owned cooperative, Cullman Electric is dedicated to improving the quality of life for the people and communities we serve. When Cullman EC was formed in 1936, many people viewed electricity as a luxury that rural homes did not need, but over time it has become essential to everyday life. In today’s world, high-speed broadband internet service has become the newest essential service, yet many homes and businesses are being left behind as they struggle to find options for quality internet service. We’re working hard to change that. We know access to true high-speed internet is essential for our members. And, it is the key to keeping us connected today and into the future.

Cullman Electric Cooperative launched Sprout Fiber Internet on June 18, 2020 and connected the first subscriber on January 18, 2021.

Utilizing the latest technology of utility-quality fiber optics, Sprout Fiber Internet offers a faster, more reliable, and stronger broadband experience compared to traditional, older DSL and cable internet technology. But what sets us apart from the other internet service providers even more is we’re delivering the same personal, dedicated, and local customer service Cullman EC members have relied on and trusted for generations. Sprout Fiber Internet is another example of Cullman Electric Cooperative’s commitment to its members for more than 90 years and for years to come.

Sprout is a service of Cullman Electric Cooperative, offering high-speed fiber-optic internet service to homes and businesses across the region. 
Fiber internet uses advanced fiber-optic technology to deliver fast, consistent connections with symmetrical upload and download speeds. This makes it ideal for streaming, working from home, gaming, online learning, and connecting multiple devices at once.

As a member-owned cooperative, Cullman Electric built Sprout to bring reliable, high-speed fiber internet to the communities it serves. That means Sprout isn’t owned by a national telecom company; it’s operated by a local team committed to providing excellent service to our members. 

By connecting our substations and offices with fiber optic internet, we are creating a smarter grid that provides Cullman Electric with more automation capabilities, ultimately increasing the reliability of our electric service to our members.

This endeavor also falls in line with our mission to power communities and empower members. Quality internet today is the electricity of the 1930s and 1940s. In 1930, fewer than 10% of farms had access to electricity. Much like our cooperative did with electricity more than 90 years ago, we’re now providing reliable, affordable true high-speed internet to our subscribers.

Sprout Fiber Internet is built to provide fast, reliable internet service for homes and businesses across the Cullman Electric Cooperative service area. Because Sprout uses fiber-optic technology, subscribers enjoy symmetrical speeds, consistent performance, and the ability to connect multiple devices without slowdowns.

Unlike many national providers, Sprout is locally operated and supported by a team based right here in our community. That means dependable service, straightforward pricing, and support from people who care about the members we serve. 
For many families and businesses across Cullman County and neighboring Winston County, Sprout offers the combination of speed, reliability, and local service that makes fiber internet an easy choice.

It won’t! Sprout Fiber Internet is billed separately from electric service. Members will see no change to their monthly electric bill because of Sprout. Only subscribers of Sprout will get a bill for their internet service.

Sprout Fiber Internet is primarily built within the Cullman Electric Cooperative service area. Construction is ongoing, and new neighborhoods and communities are added regularly as fiber expansion continues.  If your home or business is outside the current service area, you can still check availability and join the interest list. As Sprout grows, availability may expand to additional nearby communities.
